How to optimize an eBay title

Three steps, about ten seconds. Nothing to install and nothing to connect.

    1. Paste your current title. Exactly as it appears on your listing today — mistakes and all. That is what gets scored.
    2. Pick a style and your marketplace. Balanced suits most listings. Add a line of details if the title doesn’t name the model, size, or color; the rewrite gets noticeably sharper when it does.
    3. Copy the title you like into your listing. You get a recommended rewrite plus two other angles, all inside eBay’s 80-character limit.

eBay title examples, before and after

Each rewrite started from the seller’s own title plus one line of details. The character counts are real — count them yourself.

AfterApple iPhone 12 64GB Unlocked 5G Smartphone Fully Working Good Condition72

The brand was missing entirely, and "5G" and "smartphone" catch searches the original could never match. It spends 34 characters that were sitting empty.

Roughly half the original went on words no buyer types. The rewrite fixes the brand spelling and spends the same space on cut, color, and material.

18 characters over the limit, so eBay would reject it. "Beautiful", "With" and "Original" are not search terms; everything that is one survives.

What makes an eBay title rank

eBay’s search engine matches what a buyer types against your title before it considers almost anything else about your listing. A word that isn’t in your title is, for most searches, a word your listing cannot be found by. That makes 80 characters the most valuable real estate in the whole listing — and most sellers use barely half of it.

The pattern that works is unglamorous: brand, then model or product name, then the attributes a buyer would narrow by — size, color, material, capacity. No decoration, no punctuation runs, nothing that isn’t a term someone might actually search for.

The mistakes that cost the most searches

    • Leaving characters unused.Stopping at 45 characters throws away nearly half your search coverage for free.
    • Burying the brand.Brand and model are what buyers type first, so they belong at the front.
    • Decorative noise.“L@@K”, rows of exclamation marks, and “FREE SHIPPING” consume characters and match no real search.
    • Stuffing unrelated brands. It breaks eBay’s listing practices policy, and it is the fastest route to a demoted or removed listing.
    • Spending the title on condition.Condition has its own field. Use those characters on something searchable instead.

Title builder, title generator, or title optimizer?

Three names for jobs that overlap. This tool does all three, so it’s worth knowing which one you actually want.

    • An eBay title builderassembles a title out of keywords you feed it. Useful when you already know your terms and want them arranged and counted for you.
    • An eBay title generatorwrites one from scratch, from a description of the item. That’s the job when you have a photo and a box and no title yet — type what the item is and it builds one.
    • An eBay title optimizertakes the title you already have and fixes it: scores it, finds the searches it’s missing, and rewrites it inside the limit. This is where the money usually is, because a live listing that isn’t selling almost always has a fixable title.

All three come down to the same eBay SEO question — which words will a buyer type, and are they in your 80 characters? Paste a title and you get the optimizer; type a plain description of the item and you get the generator; add your own terms under Keywords to keep in and you get the builder.

    Title styles and separators

Two settings change the shape of the rewrite. Neither changes the rule that every term has to be true of your item.

    • ReadableAround 50 characters. Clean and human.
    • BalancedAround 70 characters. Search coverage that still reads well.
    • Maximum75-80 characters. Every term a buyer might type.

    Which separator should you use?

NoneNike Air Max 90 Mens US 10 Black White LeatherWidest phrase matching, nothing wasted. The default for a reason.
CommaNike Air Max 90 Mens US 10, Black White, LeatherEasiest to scan on a long title. Costs one character per comma.
DashNike Air Max 90 Mens US 10 - Black White - LeatherClear visual grouping. Costs three characters each time.
PipeNike Air Max 90 Mens US 10 | Black White | LeatherStrongest separation, most characters spent. Use it sparingly.

eBay UK, Germany, and everywhere else

A title translated word for word is not an optimized title. UK buyers search for trainers, not sneakers; German buyers type terms an English rewrite would never produce. Pick your marketplace and the rewrite comes back in that site’s language and its vocabulary, with brand and model names left intact.

The 80-character ceiling is identical on every eBay site, so everything else on this page applies wherever you sell: eBay.com, eBay.co.uk, eBay.com.au, eBay.ca, eBay.de, eBay.fr, eBay.it, eBay.es.

    Frequently asked questions

How long can an eBay title be?

eBay allows 80 characters in a listing title on every eBay site, including eBay.co.uk, eBay.de and eBay.com.au. That is a hard limit — longer titles are rejected. Most sellers use only 45 to 55 of them, which means a third of their search coverage is simply left empty.

Does the title really affect eBay search rankings?

Yes. eBay's search engine, Cassini, matches a buyer's query against your title before almost anything else. If a word isn't in your title, your listing generally won't surface for it. Item specifics matter too, but the title is the single highest-leverage field in a listing.

What makes a good eBay title?

Front-load the words a buyer would search: brand first, then model or product name, then the attributes that define it — size, color, material, capacity. Skip filler like 'L@@K' or rows of exclamation marks; they take up characters and add no search value. Write for the search box, not for a shop window.

Which separator should I use in an eBay title?

None is usually best. Spaces alone let eBay match the widest range of phrases and spend every character on a real search term, and commas or pipes cost you one character each time. Commas are the most common exception because they make a long title easier to scan. Dashes and pipes are a readability choice, not a ranking one.

What is the difference between the readable, balanced, and maximum styles?

Readable stops at around 50 characters and keeps the title easy to read. Balanced lands near 70 and is what a careful seller would write. Maximum uses 75 to 80 characters and packs in every genuine search term the item supports. None of them stuff unrelated keywords — coverage only ever comes from terms that are actually true of your item.

Can I use it as an eBay title generator, from scratch?

Yes. If you don't have a title yet, type what the item is — brand, model, size, color — and it will build one. The score it gives back is judging what you typed, so treat a low number as a comment on the raw description rather than on your listing.

Can I stop it using certain words?

Yes. Open Add details and put them in "Words to avoid". They won't appear in any of the three titles, in any form. Sellers use it for a brand they can't name on a compatible part, a word a previous listing got flagged for, or terms a category's item specifics already cover.

Do I need an eBay account connected?

No. Nothing connects to eBay and nothing is installed. Paste a title, get the rewrite, copy it wherever you list. The first one needs no account at all.

Is keyword stuffing against eBay's rules?

Yes. Adding brands or terms that don't describe your actual item breaks eBay's search and listing practices policy and can get listings removed or demoted. This tool won't do it — it only uses terms supported by what you tell it about the item. Accuracy outranks reach.

Can it write titles for eBay UK, Germany, or other sites?

Yes. Pick your marketplace and the rewrite comes back in that site's language and vocabulary — trainers rather than sneakers on eBay.co.uk, German search terms on eBay.de. The 80-character limit is the same everywhere, so the rest of the advice carries across.

Should I include the condition in the title?

Only if it genuinely helps a buyer searching. Condition has its own field on eBay, so spending characters on 'used' is often wasteful. 'New with tags', 'sealed', or 'for parts' can be worth including, because buyers do search those phrases.

Does the eBay subtitle help with search?

Not by default. The subtitle is a paid add-on and its text is only matched when a buyer searches titles and descriptions rather than titles alone. Put your search terms in the 80-character title first; treat the subtitle as sales copy, not SEO.

Is this eBay title optimizer free?

Yes — one rewrite with no account at all, and 25 a day once you create a free PalmFlow account. There is nothing to install and no card required. PalmFlow builds the free tools resellers actually use; the paid product writes complete listings from your photos and tracks the profit on every sale.

Does it work for Poshmark, Mercari, or Depop?

The rewrites are tuned to eBay's 80-character limit and its search behavior, so that is where they work best. The underlying principles — lead with brand and model, use the space you're given, don't stuff — carry over to other marketplaces, though each has its own character limit and conventions.
